Transit context

Vienna Airport is rail-friendly, but the airport-city pattern changes on 2026-09-07. Until then, use S7, REX7/Railjet, CAT, or taxi based on accommodation, luggage, and time; from 2026-09-07 to the end of October 2027, use REX7/Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof, the shortened S7 only if St. Marx works for your route, or the CAT replacement bus to Wien Mitte.

Local words
Melange (Viennese coffee with milk)heuriger (wine tavern serving young local wine)Würstelstand (sausage stand)Käsekrainer (cheese-filled sausage).
  • S7/REX7/regional rail: The public-rail fare between the airport and the city is EUR 5.50, or EUR 2.30 for the airport-zone extension if you already hold a valid Vienna city ticket. Through 2026-09-06, the S7/REX7 are the value moves to Wien Mitte and city connections.
  • Railjet: Useful for Wien Hauptbahnhof and Meidling; the airport-city fare is also EUR 5.50. During the 2026-09-07 to end-October 2027 S-Bahn works, Railjet/REX7 to Hauptbahnhof becomes the cleaner rail default for many city routes.
  • CAT: Fast and simple to Wien Mitte, but much more expensive at EUR 14.90 one-way or EUR 24.90 return. Through 2026-09-06 it runs as a 16-minute train; from 2026-09-07 to 2027-10-31 it operates as a premium replacement bus to Wien Mitte and city check-in is unavailable.
  • City transit: U-Bahn, trams, and buses are excellent. Validate paper tickets before travel.
  • Taxi/Bolt/Uber: Useful late, with luggage, or for a group. Public transit is often faster in the centre.
  • Cash: Cards are common, but carry EUR 30-60 for coffeehouses, Beisln, markets, and small counters.

Use Airalo Austria or Europe if roaming is weak. Vienna needs maps, transit, museum tickets, reservations, and ride apps; a local SIM errand is rarely worth the time.
