Layover duration

24 hours on the current EK schedule — Emirates does not fly 48h into JFK

Currency

US Dollar (USD)

Language

English (plus everything else). English: native. Useful phrase: "Can I get a..." (how NYers order everything)

Time vs Dubai

GST -8 hours (GST -9 during EST Nov-Mar). The clock change days (March, November) catch crew out — verify before sign-on.

Best months

May, June, September, October — mild temperatures, daylight long enough to use

Worst months

January and February — single-digit °C, snow shuts the city for hours

Connectivity

Excellent · Airalo US plan 1GB/7 days $4.50, 3GB/30 days $11

VPN

Not essential — unrestricted internet

Tipping

18-20% expected at sit-down restaurants — not optional. US$1-2 (AED 4-7) per drink at bars. US$2-3 (AED 7-11) per bag at hotels. Round up taxis.

Tap water

drinkable everywhere

Plug type

Type A / B (two flat pins / two flat + ground) — Dubai's adapter does not work. Buy a US$8 (AED 30) one at any Duane Reade or 7-Eleven.

Sales tax

NYC adds 8.875% on most goods at the till — displayed prices are pre-tax. Restaurant menus exclude tax + tip.

Halal anchors

Astoria / Steinway Street ("Little Egypt") in Queens — 30+ halal restaurants on a 700m strip — is the deep anchor; Curry Hill (Haandi, Adel's Famous Halal Food carts) is the closer-to-Midtown shortcut.

Transit context

Midtown Manhattan orientation — subway lines 1/2/3, A/C/E, N/Q/R/W, and the Bryant Park / Hell's Kitchen / Theater District edges are the practical anchors. Use the subway grid first and rideshare late.

  • JFK: AirTrain plus LIRR to Penn Station is usually the cleanest value play. Uber is easier off-peak but can become expensive and slower on Friday surge.
  • Subway: OMNY/contactless is enough. Use the subway for almost every daytime Manhattan move; avoid express trains until the route is obvious.
  • Late return: NYC runs 24/7, but service gets thinner late. Use main stations, stay alert, and switch to rideshare if the route gets messy.
  • Cash: Barely needed, but keep small bills for porters, counter tips, and the odd deli/cart preference.
  • Tax + tip: Sales tax appears at the register and restaurant tips are real. Budget tax plus 18-20% for sit-down meals.
  • Airport touts: Ignore arrivals limousine pitches and fixed-fare side deals. Use official rideshare, yellow taxi, AirTrain, or Curb.

eSIM. Airalo on T-Mobile network. NYC has excellent coverage everywhere except some subway stations. No reason to buy a physical SIM — eSIM activates instantly and you're connected at JFK baggage claim.
