What do you need in London?
- Layover duration
24 hours on the current EK schedule — Emirates does not fly 36h or 48h into LHR
- Currency
British Pound (GBP)
- Language
English. English: obviously fluent. Useful phrase: "Cheers" (thank you/goodbye/everything)
- Time vs Dubai
GST -4 hours (GST -3 during BST Mar-Oct)
- Best months
May, June, September — long daylight, low rain probability
- Worst months
January & February — short days, weather rules everything out
- Connectivity
Excellent · Airalo UK plan 1GB/7 days $4.50, 3GB/30 days $11
- VPN
Not essential — unrestricted internet access
- Tipping
12.5% service is usually added at restaurants — check the bill before tipping again. Cash for cabs and hotel staff. Pubs do not tip.
- Tap water
drinkable everywhere
- Plug type
Type G (UK three-pin) — Dubai's adapter does not work. Buy a £3 adapter at any Boots, or pack a multi-region travel adapter that lives in your crew bag.
- Halal anchors
Edgware Road (Lebanese, Egyptian, Iranian — primary anchor) · Hounslow (Piccadilly Line, 4 stops east of Heathrow — closest South Asian / Pakistani / Afghan halal cluster to T5)
Heathrow-side vs central London is the key split. If airport-side, the Elizabeth Line and Piccadilly Line determine whether central London is worth it; if central, plan around the nearest Tube/Elizabeth Line station and your report-time buffer.
- Piccadilly Line: The default from Heathrow when time is not the absolute constraint. Slow but cheap, direct, and reliable enough if you build the buffer.
- Elizabeth Line: The cleaner move for Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, and east London.
- Late return: Tube shuts down around midnight most nights; Night Tube helps Friday/Saturday. After a weekday Soho night, budget for Bolt/Uber back.
- Money: London is contactless-first. Your bank card works on TfL. Pay in GBP, avoid dynamic currency conversion, and check restaurant bills for service charge.
Go eSIM (Airalo). UK coverage on Three/EE networks is solid. Heathrow has SIM shops but the queue and activation time isn't worth it on a 24h layover. Activate Airalo before landing and you're connected at the gate.
