What do you need in Hong Kong?
- Layover duration
24 hours on the current EK schedule — Emirates does not fly 48h into HKG
- Currency
Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)
- Language
Cantonese, English. English: widely spoken (official language). Useful phrase: "M'goi" (please/thank you/excuse me — covers everything)
- Time vs Dubai
GST +4 hours
- Best months
October, November, March, April — drier, mild, low typhoon risk
- Worst months
July-September (typhoon season; sticky humidity) and February-March (occasional cold-wet snaps)
- Connectivity
Excellent · Airalo Hong Kong 1GB/7 days $4.50, 3GB/30 days $8
- VPN
Recommended — internet is currently open but crew increasingly use VPN as a precaution. See VPN Verdict below.
- Tipping
10% service charge typically already added at sit-down restaurants. No tip needed beyond that. Round up taxis. Cha chaan teng / dim sum / hawker stalls: no tip, never.
- Tap water
boil before drinking by safety convention; bottled (HK$8 / AED 4 at any 7-Eleven) is the crew default. Brushing teeth with tap is fine.
- Plug type
Type G (UK three-pin) — same as London, Singapore. HK$15 (AED 7) at any 7-Eleven.
- Sales tax
none. Hong Kong has no VAT, no GST, no sales tax — the displayed price is the final price. Among the only tax-free destinations on the catalog (Dubai is the other).
- Halal anchors
Mirador Mansion + Chungking Mansions (Nathan Road, TST — Pakistani, Indian, Nepalese, Indonesian, African halal in two heritage commercial buildings) is the deep anchor for Kowloon-side layovers. Cuisine Cuisine at The Mira (TST) is the world's only halal Cantonese fine dining. Islamic Centre Canteen (Wan Chai) does halal dim sum until 15:00 daily.
TST / Kowloon orientation — harbour views, Star Ferry, Temple Street, Nathan Road halal clusters, Kowloon Park, and MTR interchanges make this the key planning zone. Airport Express reaches HKG in 24 min for HK$105 (AED 49).
- Airport: Airport Express from Kowloon is the cleanest return: fast, predictable, and cheaper than a taxi in traffic.
- Octopus: Add to Apple Wallet if possible. It covers MTR, ferry, convenience stores, buses, and small purchases.
- MTR + ferry: MTR is efficient; Star Ferry is the better experience between TST and Central when time allows.
- Late return: Use main roads, MTR while running, and reputable taxi/app options. Avoid unsolicited bar or ride pitches.
- Cash: Still useful for old-school eateries, wet markets, some taxis, and tiny vendors. Withdraw a small amount.
- Tax: No sales tax is the real shopping advantage. The displayed price is usually the final price.
eSIM for convenience. HK airport has excellent SIM options (CSL, 3HK) with good prices, but Airalo activates before landing. HK has exceptional mobile coverage everywhere including MTR tunnels. If staying 48h+, a local 3HK tourist SIM (HK$88/5 days) is strong value.
