What do you need in Bangkok?
- Layover duration
24h standard / 36h on long-haul rosters / 48h rare
- Currency
Thai Baht (THB)
- Language
Thai. English: basic in tourist areas, limited elsewhere. Useful phrase: "Khop khun khrap/kha" (thank you, male/female)
- Time vs Dubai
GST +3 hours
- Best months
November, December, January, February — dry, cooler, low humidity
- Worst months
April (hot season, 38–40°C) and September (peak rain)
- Connectivity
Good · Airalo Thailand 1GB/7 days $4.50, 3GB/30 days $8
- VPN
Not essential — internet unrestricted, all UAE apps work fine
- Tipping
฿20–฿50 (AED 2–5) for porters, taxi rounded up, 10% at sit-down restaurants if no service charge. Never tip street stalls.
- Tap water
do not drink. Use bottled (฿15 / AED 2 at any 7-Eleven). Brushing teeth with tap is fine.
- Plug type
Type A, B, C, F all accepted. Buy a ฿80 (AED 8) adapter at any 7-Eleven if your Dubai one doesn't fit.
- Halal anchors
Soi Arab / Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Nana area — Lebanese, Egyptian, Indo-Pakistani) is the deep anchor; Haroon Mosque / Bang Rak (Saphan Taksin BTS) is the closer-to-Silom shortcut for halal Thai food specifically.
Silom / Sathorn orientation — BTS Sala Daeng, BTS Chong Nonsi, MRT Silom, Lumphini Park, and Convent Road are the practical anchors. Set your accommodation as origin before choosing BTS, MRT, Grab, or walking.
- Airport: If self-moving from BKK, use the official Grab pickup or the metered taxi queue. Airport Rail Link works only if traveling light and rested.
- City spine: BTS/MRT beats traffic for Silom, Siam, Saphan Taksin, Asok, Chatuchak, and river connections.
- Late return: BTS/MRT close around midnight. After that, Grab is the clean default. Avoid improvised quiet-soi walks with your phone out.
- Cash: Street food, massage, markets, and some taxis need cash. Withdraw enough for the day and expect the standard foreign-card ATM fee.
eSIM wins for short layovers. AIS and DTAC have airport SIM counters but the queue at BKK arrivals can be 30+ minutes. Airalo or local eSIM provider covers you instantly. If you're staying 48h+, the airport AIS tourist SIM (฿299/8 days unlimited) is genuinely good value.
