What do you need in Athens?

Make a plan ↓

Layover duration

Works on a compact awake window if you keep the Acropolis early, the museum indoors at midday, and the rooftop sunset as the evening anchor.

Currency

Euro (EUR)

Language

Greek. The alphabet is its own thing, but central metro and street signs are usually transliterated. English is common in tourist, hotel, and food areas.

Time vs Dubai

GST -1 hour during EEST, GST -2 during EET. One of the gentler European time shifts from Dubai.

Best months

April-June and September-October — warm, clear, and easier on the marble climbs.

Worst months

July-August — brutal heat, exposed ruins, and cruise crowds. December-February can be mild but wet.

Connectivity

Excellent · Airalo Greece/eSIM snapshot should be refreshed before prod; use the country eSIM path and confirm the live package card at checkout.

VPN

Useful, not mandatory — open internet, but UAE-region streaming and open cafe/hotel Wi-Fi are good reasons to use one.

Tipping

Modest. Round up or leave 5-10% for good table service; a coin for coffee is fine.

Tap water

Safe to drink in Athens. Islands can differ, so do not export the rule blindly to a side trip.

Plug type

Type C / F, 230V. Dubai plugs need a Euro adapter.

Halal anchors

Omonia, Victoria, Kypseli, and Kato Patisia have Middle Eastern, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Syrian, and African food corridors. Pork is common in Greek cooking, so ask.

Transit context

ATH is about 33 km east of the center. Metro Line 3 links the airport with Syntagma and Monastiraki; use Google Maps from your accommodation and plan around summer heat.

  • From ATH: Metro Line 3 is the default airport-city move when the timing works. The express bus and official taxi/app ride are the fallback.
  • Tickets: Airport fares are separate from ordinary Athens tickets. Standard city tickets are cheap; buy at machines and keep the ticket until you exit.
  • Walking: The center is compact, but heat and slopes matter. Google Maps will route you; it will not tell you that August marble feels like an oven.
  • Late night: Metro service thins or stops late. Use FREENOW/Uber taxi dispatch for the return rather than improvising on dark side streets.
  • Money: Card-first in most central places, but carry EUR 20-40 for markets, bakeries, small grills, and cash-shy counters. Avoid Euronet ATMs and decline AED conversion.
  • VAT refund: Possible for non-EU residents, but Athens is mostly a small-buy city. Only chase the paperwork for a real purchase.

Use an eSIM. Greece/EU coverage is strong and the SIM-counter errand is not worth a short layover. Use the Airalo Greece or Europe country path and confirm the live package card before checkout.
