Cape Town is an easy place to make a long list. The mountain, a coast drive, a wine lunch, maybe whales. Start by checking what is operating and how much time you have after sleep. Then choose one outing.

From the catalog
Cape Town's full guide now sits on the new Layover website with meal plans, transport cautions and alternatives for wind or rain. It helps you count the complete excursion, including the journey back.

This week's checks
Spring cableway hours are a starting point. Table Mountain lists September–October first ascent at 08:30, last ascent at 18:00 and last descent at 19:00, weather permitting. Check today's operation and seasonal hours before leaving. Those times are not a guarantee that the cableway will run on your day.
Check the journey back before adding another stop. Price and time both city journeys from your accommodation. Leave room for rest and preparation before crew pickup; shorten the outing if traffic or a vehicle wait uses that margin.
Give the day a weather alternative
If Table Mountain is operating and the complete return fits, it can be the main outing. Count the road journeys, both cable-car queues, time on top and the trip down. Getting up is only half the booking decision.
Come down with room to spare. Do not use the final advertised descent as your personal deadline.
If conditions are uncertain, keep the day local. Zeitz MOCAA gives you an indoor art visit in the Waterfront's Silo District. A Cape Malay meal gives you a different, equally worthwhile afternoon. Neither needs to be treated as a consolation prize.
For the food version, book Bo-Kaap Kombuis and leave a little time for nearby public streets in daylight. The guide's meal is a one-person Cape Malay tasting platter, subject to current availability. Confirm the menu and booking details directly. Ask about portions, ingredients and the service charge before treating the platter as something for the whole table.
Bo-Kaap is a living neighborhood. Keep to public streets, leave doorways alone and ask before photographing people. If rain or fatigue makes the walk awkward, keep the meal and drop the walk.
The outing to be careful with is the one that sounds short because only the activity is advertised. A whale boat near Hermanus still needs the journey there and back, check-in and room for delays. Do not add it after a mountain cancellation because “the boat is only two hours.” Check the full itinerary on a longer layover.
The Cape Town guide has the complete mountain, museum and meal decisions, plus the longer-excursion arithmetic. Pick the version that leaves you rested enough to enjoy it.
Crew move
Arrange the return while you are still inside the venue. Save the destination, confirm the vehicle and driver, and keep a backup payment method. A good lunch does not need an improvised late walk afterward.
In the bag
A light wind layer and a charged phone. Check current conditions before choosing exposed viewpoints; a pleasant morning does not settle the afternoon plan.
More than one good layover
Use the new website for Cape Town, then for the next city on your roster. The full catalog is free for 30 days. Card required; no charge today. It renews at USD 2.99/month or USD 29.99/year, depending on your plan. Cancel before renewal to avoid the charge.
Next Tuesday
Sydney: Sculpture by the Sea, a shorter coastal plan, and a bakery stop when sleep matters more than another ferry.
