October is a good reason to get out in Rome. It is not a reason to fit the Vatican, Colosseum and Trastevere into the same afternoon. Give lunch a place in the plan before every monument claims an hour.

On the calendar
Film plans belong later this month. The Rome Film Fest is scheduled for October 14–25. If Rome appears on a later roster, check the actual screening, venue and finish time before booking. It has not started this issue week.
Leave room to get ready. Before heading out, save the journey back to your accommodation and set a leave-by time. Allow for waiting, rest and preparation before crew pickup; an extra stop is the first thing to cut.
Choose the neighborhood before the restaurant
A useful Rome afternoon starts with a small area and one appetite.
Monti suits a Colosseum exterior look followed by a meal. The Jewish Ghetto gives you Portico d'Ottavia, a short walk and Jewish-Roman food. Trastevere works when you want lunch and its surrounding streets to be the main event.
Choose one of them. The city will still be here next time.
If you choose Trastevere, Da Enzo al 29 is in the guide for cacio e pepe or carbonara. Check its current visiting information before setting off, and expect a queue rather than building the day around an imaginary reservation. Give yourself permission to leave if waiting consumes the time you had for the meal.
Cacio e pepe means pecorino and pepper; carbonara brings pork and egg into the decision. Ask about ingredients and preparation if those matter to you. A famous name does not remove the need to order carefully.
For a shorter lunch, pizza al taglio—pizza sold by weight—and a supplì, a fried rice croquette, can do the job. Point to the amount you want and check the price. You can enjoy Rome without committing to a long restaurant service.
What I would skip is the tired march between every famous sight, followed by whichever menu is nearest when hunger wins. That is an expensive way to have an ordinary lunch.
One ticketed attraction can work if it is the purpose of the day. Book the actual entry slot, count the queue and leave the other monuments for another visit. If the booking does not fit, the exterior walk and a meal are still a complete plan.
The Rome guide carries the transport comparisons, food alternatives and booking caveats. Use those to decide what to remove, as well as what to add.
Crew move
Set the time you need to leave your final stop before ordering. “One more espresso” is easier to judge when the return is already written down.
In the bag
Comfortable shoes and a refillable bottle. Cobblestones make a long afternoon longer; pack for the walk you will actually take.
For the next city too
The new website is built for this kind of choice: where to eat, what fits, and what can wait. Try the full catalog free for 30 days. Card required; no charge today. Then USD 2.99/month or USD 29.99/year, depending on your plan. Cancel before renewal to avoid the charge.
Next Tuesday
Cape Town: check the mountain first, and keep a good lunch ready if the weather says no.
