Seoul can turn a free afternoon into six saved neighborhoods and no lunch. Start with one thing you actually want to do. This week, a market meal gets my vote.

Before you leave
Check the palace date. Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesdays, with holiday and special-opening exceptions. This newsletter arrives on a Tuesday. Check the palace authority's current calendar before making it your first stop; an autumn palace photo is not worth a journey to a closed gate.
Bukchon is a neighborhood with visiting rules. Tourist access to the restricted residential Red Zone is limited to 10:00โ17:00. Seoul's official visitor page explains the boundary. Do not follow an old โgo at sunriseโ recommendation into the restricted streets.
Keep a rain option. The National Museum of Korea has free permanent exhibitions; special exhibitions can cost extra. Pick two collections and let that be the outing. Add the journey to Yongsan before deciding whether it fits.
One market meal is enough
Gwangjang Market makes a useful starting point when you want to eat and have little appetite for planning.
Choose bindaetteok, a mung-bean pancake, then a smaller second order if you are still hungry. Ask the price and portion size before the food lands. Keep cash available and ask about ingredients rather than assuming a vegetable-looking dish meets your diet.
Sit down if you can. Eat while it is hot. You do not need to turn lunch into a filmed survey of every counter.
Afterward, decide whether there is time for a separate stop. If you have already spent your spare hour getting into the city, the answer may be no. Seoul Station is a connection point, not the end of the journey to every attraction. The airport return needs terminal walking, waiting and your onward connection as well as the train ride.
For a first visit on a suitable opening day, Gyeongbokgung and an Anguk cafe can replace the market plan. For rain or a repeat visit, choose the museum. Treat these as alternatives. Collecting all three is a different day.
Shopping is where restraint pays. Decide what you want before entering the beauty stores: sunscreen, one replacement product, or a gift. Crossing to another district because a second branch might have more choice is a good way to use the time you meant to spend resting.
The full Seoul guide helps you choose between those outings, prepare your map and payment tools, and keep a shorter meal-only version ready.
Crew move
Save the destination in Korean and English in Naver Map or KakaoMap. Save your return address too. Do this while connected, before the first confusing station exit.
In the bag
A charged power bank and a light layer. Keep enough phone battery for the journey back; shopping photos can wait.

Next Tuesday
Rome: one neighborhood, a proper lunch, and the airport journey people keep undercounting.
